Environment and Sustainability

Contributed by 'Treading Lightly', the Environmental Workshop

'Treading Lightly' met twice to discuss how we can reduce our carbon footprint. We discovered that the almost 200 people who took part in JYM used over 5702kg of carbon getting to and from the event. We took some time to look at the Quaker testimonies and we all felt that they related to our views on the environment as Quakers, especially the simplicity and environment testimonies.

Our second session was run by Laurie and we had a discussion about our knowledge of climate change and who is causing it. We also discussed whether the information we hear in the media can be misleading.

We came up with some ideas to help reduce our carbon footprint. For example - could you, as I do, use a thermos flask to put any unused boiling water from the kettle into? When you go to university would it be a good idea to consider your environmental impact when choosing your university?
